At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple, and honest. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind across the lone tree on the peak were his only companions. Day after day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

But, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.

Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against here the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of false alarms.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
